Life cycle of stars – Stage 5

Look up and see the stars. Are they all the same? How do they differ? Are they static and unchanging? Come on a journey to discover how stars change over their lives, how they are born in vast clouds of gas and dust, and how they shine for millions or even billions of years through the power of nuclear fusion. What appears to us as a calm, unchanging night sky is actually a dynamic universe filled with stars of different colours, sizes, temperatures, and lifespans — from small red dwarfs to enormous supergiants.

In this immersive exploration of stellar evolution, we’ll uncover how a star’s mass determines its destiny: some swell into glowing red giants before fading gently away, while others end in spectacular supernova explosions that forge the elements essential for planets and life. Discover how these cosmic furnaces shape galaxies and how every atom in our bodies was once created in the heart of a star. This is the story of birth, transformation, and cosmic renewal — written in light across the universe.

This two-hour lesson invites students to become both scientists and artists as they paint the life cycle of a star — tracing its journey from stellar nursery to its final fate as a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole. After bringing stellar evolution to life on canvas, students will step into the planetarium to identify real stars at different stages of development, connecting their artwork to the living universe above them. By combining creativity with exploration, this experience transforms abstract concepts into something vivid, memorable, and truly out of this world.
